Hiring A Contractor
Renovating your home is generally a big decision. You want to make sure that the contractor you hire is qualified & will take care of your needs. There are a lot of "fly-by-night" contractors out there that are only in it for the short term, so customers need to be careful. These contractors usually do not have a business license, proper liability insurance or WCB coverage for their employees. Here are some tips to help you choose the right contractor to fit your needs.
As a rule of thumb, always get estimates from 3 companies and while they are estimating your project, be sure to ask the following questions.
-Does the contractor carry proper liability insurance & WCB coverage?
-Is the contractor a member in good standing with the BBB?
-Is the contractor a member of the Manitoba Shingling Contractors Association?
-Is the contractor advertised in the yellow pages & have a website? This shows their commitment to their company & the industry.
-Does the contractor use a written contract that includes what work is to be done & terms of payment?
-Will the contractor provide you with its workmanship warranty in writing?
-Does the contractor use only #1 CSA approved materials?
-Is the contractor certified by the manufacturers whose product they are installing?
-Can & will they priovide a list of refrences?
Remember price should not be the only consideration when choosing the right contractor. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. Make sure you compare what each company is offering you, from products to service to warranties!
